Why we choose 304 stainless steel
Inox is also known as “stainless steel”. There are currently 3 common types of stainless steel on the market: 304 stainless steel (18–20% chromium and 10% nickel), 201 stainless steel (18% chromium and 8% nickel) and 430 stainless steel (18% chromium and 0% nickel).
Of these, inox 304 is very shiny, sturdy and rust-free, so it is the most expensive. Meanwhile, 201 stainless steel has little nickel, and 430 contains a lot of iron and impurities with almost no nickel. So although 201 and 430 are cheaper than 304, they rust easily, are less durable and less safe.
How to identify products made of genuine 304 stainless steel
Because 304 stainless steel is expensive and some sellers chase profit, many fake “304” products are now found everywhere on the market and are hard to control. In practice it is very hard to tell 304 from other grades with the naked eye.
If you must test it, you can identify 430 stainless steel with a magnet, since 430 is strongly magnetic. For 201 and 304, the best test is acid or a dedicated test reagent. With acid, 304 barely reacts, while 201 will fizz. A dedicated reagent distinguishes them by color: brick red means 201, gray means 304.
Choose a reputable brand
These basic methods for telling the 3 common grades apart can be quite useful, but they are not always accurate. Not to mention the chemical methods using acid and test reagents: these chemicals are toxic and hard to find, and not everyone has the expertise to own and use them.
So the best approach is still to be a smart consumer: research brands carefully before buying. Time will show whether their reputation is real and whether they meet your expectations.
